Birchills United are celebrating after they secured the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One title in their first season of senior non-League football.
It's been a fantastic campaign for the team who play their home games at The Old Red Lion Ground, former home of the now-defunct Blakenall FC during their Southern League days. They have won 29 of their 35 League games, scoring 112 goals in the process, and are in League Cup semi-final action on Saturday, April 19th.
Formed in 2006, they swept all before them in their first season in the Wolverhampton Combination with a team of local youngsters from the Bloxwich area, including up-and-coming striker, Alan Wilkes whose prowess in front of goal prompted a move to Walsall FC.
The success of team was recognised when the West Midlands (Regional) League offered them a place in the summer of 2007 and now they are looking forward to taking their place in the Premier League. "Things have really taken off for us," said player-manager, Michael Moseley. "We have a fantastic group of lads who are good mates off-the-field as well as on it and that counts for a lot.
"The progress that we have made on the pitch is now being matched by other exciting developments at the club. We are building a strong committee and these are certainly exciting times."
