BLOXWICH United AFC have expressed their delight at being given a place in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division for the 2008/09 season.
Having lifted the Division One title last season, playing under the name of Birchills United, there were fears that the club would be moved across to the top-flight of the Midland Combination, but common sense prevailed after The FA Leagues Committee finalised the non-League club allocations for the new campaign. “We are delighted with the news,” said player-manager, Michael Moseley. “Moving into the Midland Combination Premier Division would have hit us hard financially as we would have been travelling to the south of Birmingham and into Coventry and Warwickshire every other week and as a result there would have been very few local derbies for us.
“The West Midlands (Regional) League is our local League and will give us the opportunity to continue to grow and develop as a club. It’s going to be a tough test for us but we are looking forward to pitting our wits at the higher level.
“The fact that we now know which League we will be playing in means that we can start planning for the new season and recruiting the type of player who we feel will serve us well and cope with the demands of the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division.”
The club, who play their home games at The Old Red Lion Ground in Somerfield Road, Bloxwich, have a number of exciting pre-season friendlies lined up, starting with the visit of a Walsall XI on Friday, July 11th.
