Welsh Imports Boost Shawbury United's Title Challenge (November 05, 2007)
NO LESS than seven Welsh Premier players are currently in the line-up at Shawbury United, who are plying their trade and riding high in the West Midlands Premier League! After Football League experience with Crewe Alexandra and Macclesfield Town, striker Peter Smith spent three seasons in the Welsh Premier, scoring 22 goals from 64 starts for Newtown and Rhyl. Martyn Giles made 89 appearances for Newtown after many years of Nationwide League football experience with West Bromwich Albion, Chester City and Shrewsbury Town and also played in the Conference with Yeovil. Former Shrewsbury Town first-teamer Michael Brown was also at Latham Park, scoring five goals from 32 league starts, after a career which took in 418 Football League appearances. Damien Currier played in the Welsh Premier for TNS and Rhyl between 1996 and 1999, and returned after a seven year absence last season to play briefly for Caersws, scoring on his debut against Caernarfon Town. Tom Reynolds is another ex-Robin who has linked-up with the Shropshire outfit after service with Porthmadog and Caersws, while Daniel Blocksidge scored seven from 16 for Llansantffraid and Welshpool some 10 years ago. And former Shrewsbury Town and Cheltenham trainee Marcus Sharrad has just been released by Caersws to join Shawbury, also being a former Robin!
