Rothwell Corinthians were formed in 1934.and they first played in the Kettering and District Amateur League. The idea of the team was first put forward in a terrace house in Littlewood Street. At that time the league had three divisions and the Corinthians were placed in the Division Two.
When football resumed after the second World War, the Corinthians were playing at the old recreation ground. This venue was their headquarters for the majority of the next twenty years.
The Corinthians introduced their first reserve team into the league in 1950 and, nine years later, they brought the first league honours to the club when they became Champions of Division Three.
The following season the first team won the First Division Championship and they repeated this feat in 1964. However, the following season they were relegated and by the end of the decade they found themselves in the Third Division.
It was not until 1979 that they began to get themselves noticed again as they were promoted to the First Division and also managed to reach the N.F.A. Area Cup Final. The 1980-81 season marked the beginning of the emergence of the club as it is today. With the move to Rothwell Town's Cricket Ground came a more professional approach to the organisation of the club. Coinciding with this the League had re-styled itself as the East Midlands Alliance and lifted its standards, a move much appreciated by the Corinthians. In 1984 the Corinthians gained promotion to the Premier Division. Meanwhile, behind the scenes the club had purchased the land on which the present facilities are located. These facilities were officially opened by Northampton Town in 1986.
Season 1989-90 saw the Corinthians lift their first Premier Division Championship. Season 1994-95 saw them secure their second Premier Championship, and after consultation with the United Counties league Management Committee, promotion was secured.
Subsequently there have been improvements in the Corinthians facilities, the biggest being the introduction of floodlights, all geared towards meeting the criteria for the United Counties Premier Division. This remains the Corinthians next objective.
Recent seasons have seen the club accepted into the F.A.Vase and two successive appearances in the Northamptonshire Junior Cup Final. Last season saw the Reserves finsh as runners-up and gain promotion to UCL Reserve Division 1.
Recently the club seen the introduction of a Youth Team into the Northants Senior Youth League as part of the ongoing objective to produce good quality players for the senior teams. In their first season that team won the league cup. The season of 2005-2006 was again highly successful with the team finishing as runners-up in the league and progressing to the 3rd round of the FA Youth Cup.
The entrance to Rothwell Corinthians ground is down this tiny footpath. There is no car park or access for vehicles. Corinthians average gate for the 2007/08 season is 36, with their highest gate being 42, so currently this isn't a problem. An FA Cup appearance in the First Round Proper may prove more problematical in the future!
What to do when in Rothwell
Rothwell is a historic Northamptonshire market town, formerly known as Rowell. There is a wealth of lovely buildings in this attractive small town and those with time to spare to take a leisurely stroll around it are well rewarded by the architectural gems to be discovered. One such building is the delightful MARKET HOUSE on Market Hill, designed by William Grumbold. As a Catholic at a time of religious persecution, he was to spend long periods in prison for his beliefs. Unable to openly practice his faith, he encoded symbols of it into his buildings. It is no coincidence that Market House is cross shaped.
Although Rothwell is relatively small and sits next to the major town of Kettering it is a surprisingly busy town at weekends and during weekday evenings. The Woolpack in the middle of town is a lively place which offers everything from real ales, an open fireplace and a large garden as well as live bands. And for the real hard-core of you, there’s even a resident cat to stroke in the bar!The town centre is seconds from Rothwell Town FC, and a very short drive from Corinthians.
