Rothwell Town, or The Bones, were formed in 1895. They currently play in the Southern League and as the pictures show have a nice old ground and social club. The record attendance for Cecil Street was set in 1971 for a game with Northamptonshire rivals Irthlingborough Diamonds, 2,508 turned up to watch the sides play in a United Counties League fixture.
The floodlights at Rothwell Town are old fashioned but impressive. Not so many years ago you could see a football ground from miles away because of the floodlights, sadly now many of the new 'lego land' grounds in the Football League and Premiership opt for the built into the stand variety.
View of the small stand behind the goal.
The main Stand at Rothwell Town, again old fashioned but its a symbol of what makes non-league football ground so great.
This season's programme at Rothwell sells for £1.20, as a one off purchase its great value as there is lots to read.
What to do when in Rothwell
Rothwell is a historic Northamptonshire market town, formerly known as Rowell. There is a wealth of lovely buildings in this attractive small town and those with time to spare to take a leisurely stroll around it are well rewarded by the architectural gems to be discovered. One such building is the delightful MARKET HOUSE on Market Hill, designed by William Grumbold. As a Catholic at a time of religious persecution, he was to spend long periods in prison for his beliefs. Unable to openly practice his faith, he encoded symbols of it into his buildings. It is no coincidence that Market House is cross shaped.
Although Rothwell is relatively small and sits next to the major town of Kettering it is a surprisingly busy town at weekends and during weekday evenings. The Woolpack in the middle of town is a lively place which offers everything from real ales, an open fireplace and a large garden as well as live bands. And for the real hard-core of you, there’s even a resident cat to stroke in the bar!The town centre is seconds from Rothwell Town FC, and a very short drive from Corinthians.
