Stafford Town - A Brief History
Gordon Evans formed what was then Stafford F.C. in 1976, after a split with Stafford Southend F.C.He then formed a working relationship with Reg Birks, the manager of Stafford Rangers and the club became the nursery side for Rangers. At that time the club played its home games at Burton Manor Sports & Social Club in the old Staffordshire County League South. The club switched to the Midland Combination - Division Two for the 1977/78 season and won the league the following year, only being denied promotion to Division One because they were a nursery side.Due to financial constraints the club moved to the Staffordshire County League North in 1981/82 and at that point changed its name to Stafford Town.
Stafford Town won the Bourne Sports Trophy and the Staffordshire Vase in 1984 and shortly afterwards they joined the Staffordshire Senior League. The club finished runners-up in the Staffordshire Vase in 1988.1990 saw the club move from Burton Manor to Stafford Cricket & Hockey Club.In the early 1990s Stafford Town merged with the highly successful Sunday League team MSHD who had just won the Midland Sunday Cup.In 1991/92 they just missed out on winning the Staffordshire Senior League title, despite only losing two games all season.
The following season they finished in third place and were accepted into the West Midlands (Regional) League playing their home games at Rowley Park Stadium.Stafford Town won the league title in their first season and in order to secure promotion they moved to Marston Road, the home of Stafford Rangers.During the 1990s the club had a number of mangers; Paul Kelly, Chris Curtis and finally Alan Sommerville took over the reigns. The 1999/2000 season was without doubt Towns most successful season. The club won the West Midlands (Regional) League title and were duly promoted to the Midland Football Alliance, they were also runners-up in both the Staffordshire FA Vase and the League Cup.
Stafford Town’s first season in the Alliance saw the club have a fantastic run in the FA Cup, beating higher league opposition in Paget Rangers and Moor Green. They then drew Harrow Borough in the 3rd Qualifying Round, drawing away, they then lost the replay 3-1 at Marston Road.
Following a series of poor results Alan Sommerville resigned as manager and the next few seasons saw a stream of managers come and go.Following a disastrous season in 2003/04 Gordon Evans returned to the club as chairman. At the end of the season the club decided to leave Stafford Ranger’s ground and returned to Rowley Park, they also dropped back down to the West Midlands League to regroup. The current management team of Steve Dockerty and Calvin Bailey were appointed and have succeeded in building the nucleus of a good side.
The club formed an under 17s side at the start of the 2005/06 season, Stafford Rangers Ladies also asked to move to Rowley Park and be part of Stafford Town. For the 2006/07 season Stafford Town had an under 18s & an under17s side as well as Stafford Town Ladies F.C.Alongside this the club launched junior sides for both boys and girls.
The 2007/08 Stafford Town Matchday Programme.
This is one of the best programmes in the First Division of the West Midlands League. Costing £1.00 for 28 pages it represents great value and has all the latest stas from the league and club histories from both the home and away sides. Quite a few adverts in this one but this can only be expected as the club claim to make £15,000 a season from advertising.
